Speeding along Sutton Road

There seems to an ever increasing problem with speeding vehicles along the 40mph stretch of the sutton road. A more realistic speed of vehicles seems to well above 50mph. It must be at least 10 years since i have seen any police enforcement of the speed limit. If a vehicle does stay within the speed limit there is usually some idiot intent on tailgating or overtaking with total disregard to any other road user. With the amount of residences along this road why is it not 30mph.

    Hi!

I’m your county councillor. Sorry I haven’t responded more quickly but I’ve just got back from holiday!

I’ve spent more of the last few years since I was elected trying to make the A1101 safer, with some success (particularly in the Gypsy Lane area.)

Back when we were making proposals for the area I did try and get a lower speed limit (and cameras) to police that section of road and those beyond it better. But, primarily for technical reason, it wasn’t to be.

If the situation is worsening then we should have another look at it. First thing would be to get the Speedwatch team out there to check how serious the problem is.

As an aside, might I recommend that you pop along to the next Wisbech & District Neighbourhood Forum? This is a public meeting where you can help the police and council set priorities for the forthcoming months and its an excellent way to push a problem onto the immediate agenda. I can do this for you (and will be happy to) but its always stronger coming directly from local people. The date for the next meeting has not yet been set, but it wont be too long and you can keep track of them here

In the meantime, if you can email me with your name and address (or phone me) then I can try and get the Speedwatch team out when they are next available.

    Best Regards,

    Cllr. Steve Tierney

    Alan Boughen says:

I am the Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for the area of Sutton Road and will arrange for a speedwatch session to be conducted.
I have also requested a speed survey to be completed which will provide me with more detail about speeds of vehicles against the time of the day.
This information can then be used to deploy officers on enforcement sessions in a more intelligent manner.
If you wish to get involved with the speedwatch scheme don’t hesitate to contact PCSO Martin Bogunovic by calling 101 extension 3799.

    @AlanBoughen

Thanks Alan! You saved me even having to call you!

Can you liase with me so that I can be there on the speedwatch day. I can then leaflet the road to let residents know we’re doing it and try to get others involved!

    Cambridgeshire County Council says:

Thank you for your comments regarding the existing 40 mph speed limit on the A1101 Sutton Road Leverington, from your observations of existing drivers and their speeds being closer to 50 mph.

The opinion of the Local Highway Authority is that to imnplement a reduction in the speed limit to 30 mph would require the installation of traffic calming features to actually reduce vehicle speeds.

The best features to keep speeds low are full speed humps, with speed cushions coming a close second. However, experience has shown that implementing these features on heavily trafficked routes, especially with the number of Heavy Commercial Vehicles that use this road on a daily basis, would cause noise and vibrations affecting the residents who live alongside Sutton Road.

Other features which are less effective might be considered but again with this type of measure (a build-out into one side of the carriageway), the larger vehicles could cause too much noise when breaking to give way to oncoming vehicles, this could also cause vehicles to speed up to “beat” oncoming traffic.

The County Council has recently adopted a policy whereby local councils can request a reduction in speed limits, as part of the County Council’s approach to delivering localism. This is a matter which the Parish Council may wish to consider; say, looking to reduce the speed limit from 40 mph to 30 mph.

You will see that the local Constabulary are looking at action to address the speeding which is taking place.

Wisbech & District Neighbourhood Policing Team says:

I have conducted two Speedwatch events along the 40mph part of Sutton Road within the past three weeks, one Northbound and one Southbound. The results were as follows:-

Monday 16th April 2012, commencing at 10.50am for 60 minutes.
316 vehicles were monitored travelling Southbound during this time, zero vehicles were recorded speeding.

Tuesday 1st May 2012, commencing at 2.15pm for 45 minutes.
249 vehicles were monitored travelling Northbound during this time, three vehicles were recorded speeding with the highest speed being 49mph.

    Andy Morris says:

As a resident on the Sutton road I travel along it on a very regular basis, both ways, but mostly going toward Long sutton. The problems I encounter on a regular basis is, Farm vehicles failing to pull over to let vehicles pass when trying to get to work, or people ( Not going to specify age or gender ) going to slow, just below the posted speed limit, thereby causing tailbacks and frustration and people to take risks in order to pass, these slow drivers, seem to do so just so they can honk thier horns, flash thier lights and scream at others trying to get on with thier journey. Most of the Sutton road is through open farmland with two small villages, no schools or residential areas other than these vallages, and no childrens play areas, so you have to ask why the speed limit is lower than the national speed limit of 60mph on such roads. I have seen no problems along the 40mph stretch, nor do I expect a problem, as I walk on the paths, not on the road.
